Hello, My name is David Charles Howden
Hello, My name is David Charles Howden
David was born in Cambridge, UK, and began drawing cartoons from an early age. After school at sixteen, where he spent many lunchtimes drawing cartoons for his friends, he became an apprentice bookbinder, restoring and binding leather books and journals by hand. A trade in which he has now been involved for many years.
He discovered his love of writing and storytelling whilst taking his daughter to a reading class held at his local library and he soon started to include his cartoons in the books.
Many of these can be found, along with updates on his writing by visiting the 'David Howden Illustrator and Author' page on Instagram or Facebook.
The cartoons used in the books feature there, as well as many work-in-progress shots from initial pencil to ink. He used many of these in 'The Tooth Bearer' illustrated book and its sequels and tales books.
His daughter provides much of the inspiration to write the books and has also helped with the drawings, submitting some of her own for the illustrated copy of 'The Tooth Bearer' and the books that followed.
Many stories have influenced his writing style, including the Anne of Green Gables books by Lucy Montgomery, the magical tales by Enid Blyton and the fantasy of Sir Terry Pratchett. The famous story of the Cottingley Fairies of 1917 is featured throughout the Tooth Bearer work. A story which has always fascinated him.
He never goes far without one of his hats. The one time he didn't wear one, whilst awaiting his daughter at school pick up some years ago, the teacher held her back because they didn't
recognise him in the crowd without his hat.
